“Long Strikes Again, Takes Second-Straight Friday at Potomac”
“Corbin Scores in Street Stock Challenge”
By Doug Watson
Budds Creek, MD- Mechanicsville Md.’s Stevie Long became the first three-time winner of the season as he scored his second win in a row in last Friday nights 30-lap limited late model headliner at Potomac speedway. With his win. Long earned himself a guaranteed starting spot in the season-ending Southern Maryland Nationals in September.
David Williams and Long would bring the field down to the initial green flag of the event. Long blasted into the top-spot as the pack raced off turn-two. Just like his win the week prior, Long would eventually go on to lead every lap of the event to secure his 9th career limited late model win at Potomac. Eventual runner-up David Williams kept Long in his sights, but could not get close enough to mount a challenge.
“I’ll tell you what, it’s always nice to win at home.” Long stated. “Anytime you can out run David Williams here at Potomac your doing something right and to earn a starting spot in the nationals is pretty neat because that race is one we want to get.” Kenny Moreland would take third, Ben Bowie was fourth and Cody Lear would complete the top-five. Point leader and defending track champion Tommy Wagner Jr. had a rough night. After heavy contact with Winchester regular Andy Anderson on lap-six of the event, Wagner showed his displeasure to Anderson, while the race was under caution, and was subsequently disqualified from the event. Bowie took the heat race win.
In the 25-lap Potomac/Winchester challenge event for the street stocks, Mike Corbin became the 8th different Potomac winner of the season with his victory in the $500 event. Pole-sitter Mike Latham grabbed the early lead and held the top-spot for the first seven laps of the race. Defending track champion Kurt Zimmerman would then snare the race lead on the 8th go round until he would bobble off turn two on the 17th lap allowing eventual winner Mike Corbin to assume the race lead. Corbin would go onto lead the final 8-laps to post the win, but had to repel the advances of 20th starting Mike Bennett to score the popular win. “Mike (Bennett) is a real clean racer.’ Corbin said. “He let me know he was back there a few times but we were able to hold him off.” Zimmerman held on for third, Darren Alvey was fourth and 14th starting Scottie Nelson rounded out the top-five. Attrition was high in the event as only six of the original 24 feature starters were around for the finish. Heats for the 27 cars on hand went to Latham, Zimmerman and Mike Rose.
In other action, Rich Marks continued his hot-streak with his second in a row and third of the season in the 20-lap modified main, Ageless Jerry Dick, 79 years young, took top honors in the 12-lap four-cylinder feature and in twin 15-lap hobby stock features Jimmy Randall, the defending class champion, took his fourth win of the season in the make-up event from July 3 and rookie Jonathon Raley wired the field in the nightcap event for his second win of the season.
